Why Do I Need the VIRTUAL Winery System?Running a winery is much like commanding an oil tanker. It takes a long time to change course, so you had better do everything you can to be sure you are heading in the right direction.

Accordingly, you must implement a flexible financial model and vintage plan to respond contemporaneously to such outside influences. You must know the long term financial effects and resource requirements of increasing production, modifying product mix or changing distribution channels. Some BackgroundThe Virtual Winery System was initially developed at the request of a winery owner who needed to raise capital and negotiate credit lines in order to finance a significant expansion. The relationships between the purchase and development of vineyard property, the types of wine to produce, release dates, sales cycles, the various distribution channels, capital budgets and barrel requirements, financial and capital resources and many other variables were just to complex to evaluate without a cohesive and comprehensive financial model. The only financial model available that even came close to meeting these requirements was a model developed by a National Accounting Firm. This model was nothing more than a huge, very complex and undocumented MSExcel spreadsheet. The model requires the user to have an expert knowledge of Excel and it sells for about $8,000. Even with its complexity and high price tag, this product does not even come close to accurately modeling a winery operation. The VIRTUAL Winery was developed to fill the need for a comprehensive, yet easy to implement planning tool for winery operations.
What is Required to Implement the VIRTUAL Winery?
The VIRTUAL Winery System was designed to be used by winery owners, their financial staff and advisors. The user does not have to be a computer expert. The system does require that the user have a certain amount of financial knowledge, an understanding of winery cost accounting and also should be comfortable in the use of MSExcel. The model is menu driven, easily implemented and well documented. The hardware requirement is a PC with at least 256 Mbytes of memory, a processor speed of at least 850 MHertz, and 2 to 10 Mbytes of available hard disk space (depending on the number of scenarios to be saved). Windows XP OS, MSOffice2003 or Office XP must be installed. Note - Windows 98 OS, MSOffice 2000 and 97 are no longer supported. To facilitate program support, an internet connection and and Windows Messenger 5.0 are highly recommended.
